About Poplar & Pine
The People
Ashlyn Scoggins
Background
Raised alongside the poplars and pines of the North Carolina Piedmont, Ashlyn grew up with one foot in the Eno River and the other in the Flat River. Whenever possible, she spent her time listening to bird song, catching minnows with t-shirt traps, and comfortably knowing that a short car ride could either get her to the Blue Ridge Mountains or the Carolina coast.
With photography as her gateway to the creative world, she spent much of her formative years exploring the great outdoors with a camera in tow. Over time, she began experimenting with hands-on natural processes such as cyanotypes, printmaking, painting with natural pigments, fiber arts, and more.
Experience
For the past several years, Ashlyn has shared her love of crafting and outdoor learning with children and adults through community events such as the Piedmont Earthskills Gathering, Shakori Hills Grassroots’ Kids Tent, Carrboro Music Festival, and Durham’s Earth Day Festival. She has worked with Drumming for Wellness N.C. to help host activities for children and families to explore rhythm, experiment with sound, and even create instruments from recycled materials. Ashlyn has also volunteered at earthskills events, working alongside kids in the woods to create engaging, hands-on experiences while further exploring the natural world. She has recently been involved in coordinating gatherings and retreats that connect participants with their inner wild and the craft of living intentionally.
Vision
Ashlyn wouldn’t be where she is today without the incredible mentors she has gained throughout her life and those who paved the way before her. Her goal is to share the experiences and lessons she has learned (and continues to learn!) to provide mentorship that will help others discover the extraordinary in themselves and the world around them.
